What It’s Like to Work With an Editor

Handing over your writing to an editor can feel a bit like baring your soul. I understand that deeply - not just as an editor, but as a writer myself.

You’ve put time, energy, and intention into your words. Maybe you’ve stayed up late polishing a personal statement, or you’ve re-read your website copy so many times it’s starting to blur. You know it needs something … but you’re not sure what. And showing it to someone else? That can feel vulnerable.

Which is why I want to tell you what it’s actually like to work with me.

I’m Not Here to Judge - I’m Here to Support

I’m naturally quite gentle and quiet by nature - definitely not the red-pen-wielding stereotype some people might imagine when they hear ‘editor’! My job isn’t to correct you. It’s to help shape your writing into its strongest, clearest version, while preserving your voice and your intent.

Editing, for me, is never about tearing things apart. It’s about collaborating with care. I approach every piece of writing with deep respect for the effort behind it, and I always aim to make suggestions that are encouraging, constructive, and purposeful.

My Process: Kind, Careful, Collaborative

Whether you’re sending me a university essay, business copy, or a personal application, here’s what you can expect:

  • I’ll take the time to understand what you’ve written and why

  • I’ll read slowly, thoughtfully, and with care

  • I’ll offer improvements that clarify, strengthen, and smooth, without steamrolling your voice

  • I’ll never over-edit or change your meaning

  • If something isn’t clear, I’ll ask questions, not make assumptions

You’ll receive your document with tracked edits and clear comments. For copy editing, I’ll explain why I’ve suggested the changes I have. My goal is for you to come away with a clearer, stronger piece of writing and a better understanding of what’s working and why.

Meet My Assistant, Lottie

Meet my dog, Lottie, who helps Laura in so many ways.

Wherever I’m working - whether it’s at my desk, sat comfortably on the sofa, or out in the garden on a warm day - Lottie is always nearby. She’s my little Shih Tzu and constant companion, usually tucked beside me while I write and edit.

Her presence is quiet but grounding. There’s something reassuring about her gentle company, especially when I’m deep in someone’s writing, shaping sentences with care. Lottie’s calmness mirrors the energy I try to bring to my work: steady, focused, and kind. (Well, except when the doorbell rings!)

What I Believe In

If there’s one thing I want every client to know, it’s this: your work is safe with me.

I believe in:

  • Collaboration: Editing is something we do together, not something done to you

  • Preservation: Your voice matters, and I’ll help make it shine, not replace it

  • Respect: Every piece of writing deserves to be treated with care, regardless of experience, style, or subject

I’m not here to ‘fix’ you. I’m here to support you.
